A Lamp You Can’t Grow Out Of.

September 2024

Duration: 5 Weeks

Location: University of Cincinnati

Design Brief:

Design a battery-operated night light with a standard base and interchangeable characters as a child’s interests change.

Inspiration

Minimal and Abstract: a defined base form that, with added features, can become any animal or character.

Exploration

Defining form and features.

The Form: pill-shaped lamps that can conform to any character. Experimentation with defined necklines, curve steepness leading into the head area, and silhouette.

The Features: developing potential characters, eye shape, base/leg styles, and the silhouette of the base “light puck.”

Final Breakdown: sketching through each piece of the lamp and their connection points.

Prototypes

Cardboard Models - defining scale and shape, as well as three distinct pieces (light puck, lamp legs, and lamp body)

3D Print (1) - combining light puck into the base of the lamp rather than two separate pieces, establishing form and interchangeable feature

3D Print (2) - simplifying animal features, modifying tolerances for snap-fit pieces

High Fidelity Model Analysis

Breaking down the design for refinement

Feedback:

(provided by 25 University of Cincinnati Industrial Design students)

  • Reorient Eye Placement

  • Seal the base so light can’t get through

  • Use a more saturated color palette for characters

  • Finish the end of the trunk with filleted corners (elephant-specific)

  • Use warm light to reduce harsh tones

CAD Refinement

The final modifications

  • Increased wall thickness and part tolerances to block light

  • Twistable battery cover

  • Updated, snap-fit battery holder with designated light bulb slot

  • Modified button for increased accuracy

Modifications:

  • Interchangeable Lamp Tops

  • Minimal, Abstracted Animal Detailing

  • “Go to Sleep” Eyes Engage User

  • Hidden, Easy-Access Push Button

  • Warm, Diffused Light

Refined Model:

The Night Light Pals

Interchangeable Characters for Every Room and Interest.

One Size Fits All

The Internals:

  1. Twist-and-Click Battery Cover

  2. Two AA Batteries

  3. Snap-Fit Battery Holder

  4. LED (Threaded Through Battery Holder + Cover)

  5. Push Button and Button Cap

  6. Base Module

Any compatible Night Light Pal can snap onto the base.
